Our driveways and patios are built to last

With more than 35 years experience in block paving and natural stone work, we understand the importance of quality workmanship which is why we never cut corners. All our driveways and patios are built to last - guaranteed.

Guaranteed quality driveways and patios

If the base on which the blocks are laid has not been properly prepared, they will eventually sag and move apart under the weight of vehicles parked on them. That’s why we pay as much attention to the groundworks as we do to the surfacing work.

So what does it take to build a quality driveway or patio?

Well, for a start, the soil sub-base that is to form the new driveway, path or patio (including any old driveway materials such as tarmac or concrete) is dug out to a depth of around 300mm (12 inches). If the ground is soft, then we may have to dig deeper.

The finished new driveway, path or patio needs to be 150mm (6 inches) below any damp proof course that you may have on your house or garage. A fall of at least 1:60 needs to be established to allow water to run away to a drainage point. These measurements are based on using a block paver that has a depth of 50mm. There are also 60 and 80mm pavers available for areas that will recieve heavier vehicles. 80mm sized blocks are normally used for commercial paving projects.

We then use quality MOT (Ministry of Transport) Type 1 British Standard Approved hardcore stone (the type used for road building) to form the base of your new driveway. It is compacted with a heavy plate compactor or whacker plate to the correct depth allowing for the screed sand and blocks to be added. We always use grit sand for the next layer, not building sand. Grit sand supports your paving better than normal building sand and allows for improved drainage should you get a penetration of water into your paving.

Edge restraints around the perimeter where there is no solid edge to work to such as a house or garage are also added. Edging kerbs are embedded in concrete to a depth of around 100mm (4 inches) with concrete set at an angle of 45 degrees behind the kerbs to stop them from moving. Any inspection chambers (manhole covers) are also set in place.

The final part of creating your stunning new driveway or patio is using quality blocks or natural stone for the surface from Britain’s leading suppliers such as Marshalls, Brett, Bradstone, Plaspave and Stonemarket.

We try to choose a dry day to lay your paving, very hard, we know!

We always try to work from several packs of paving at a time to ensure that an even distribution of colours and shades is achieved.

After all the block pavers have been laid, we then cut paving blocks for the infill areas so that the paving is up tight to the finished edge all around the perimeter of the paving before any compaction of the paving takes place. This stops any debris being vibrated down between the joints, thus distorting the laying pattern. Compaction will be done again with a whacker plate 2 or 3 times.

Particular attention is taken when compacting the edges. The paving edges need to be level to stop any trip points. Care is also be taken around sensitive areas such as walls, drains or inspection covers where we always use a rubber mallet.

After we've installed your dream driveway or patio, all that’s left is for you to do is to enjoy it!
